CAT and Genny Training Course
When carrying out any excavation work for utility or other purposes, it is important to ensure that all cables, water and gas pipes are effectively located and avoided.
At Alban Safety, our CAT and Genny training course is specifically designed for excavation operators, utilities personnel and supervisors and managers who will significantly benefit from cable avoidance tool training.
The course is designed to provide training in using locating equipment safely and in line with all relevant health and safety legislation, thereby enabling the user to accurately locate underground services in order to avoid damaging them and risking injury and costly damages during excavation works.
Course Aim
To enable delegates to gain a thorough understanding in the safe use of cable avoidance tools to enable them to locate cables and pipes safely. This training course covers the use of CAT and Genny location tools to meet the HSG47 Health and Safety Guideline .

The course has been developed for site managers, supervisors, engineers or anyone else tasked with locating underground cables and pipes.

Theory Training
- Explanation of the “safe system of work” ref: HSG47 “Avoiding Danger from Underground Services”
- Why Use Locators
- Cable Strike
- Limitations
- Explanation, purpose and interpretation of Utility Plans
- Marking up of Utility Plans , identifying marker posts, covers and any visible signs of utility routes
- Safe digging practices
- DVD – Cat & Genny
Practical Training using CAT and Genny Locator
- Reading and scanning the area
- Use of accessories
Course Objective
To instruct attendees on the correct use and limitations of cable avoidance tools and accessories in order that excavation works can be carried out in a safe manner.
Examination Information
Delegates will be awarded a certificate of attendance on successful completion of the multiple choice assessment.
