Work Resumes At Everton Stadium Following Worker's Death

Construction at Everton Stadium has resumed following the death of worker Michael Jones.  

Work on the £500m Everton Stadium was suspended after 26-year-old Michael Jones died after an on-site incident. Jones was injured at around 1 pm on Monday, 14 August.

Emergency services arrived at the scene shortly after, but unfortunately, Jones was declared dead shortly after he arrived at Aintree Hospital.

Work ceased to allow Merseyside Police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to carry out investigations on the incident.

“Following discussions with the HSE, Everton and the family of Michael Jones, we informed our project team that we will resume construction operations at Bramley-Moore Dock on Wednesday, 23 August,” said a spokesperson for Laing O’Rourke, the main contractor on the Everton Stadium.

“We have put in place additional support for everyone, including access to trained counsellors, and are focused on returning to work in an appropriate and respectful way following the tragic incident,” they added.

Everton Stadium workers will be offered mental wellbeing support.

Laing O’Rourke said workers will be offered access to an on-site trauma counsellor, and posters would also be on display outlining the details of wellbeing services.

In a statement, they said: “We have put in place additional support for everyone, including access to trained counsellors. We are focused on returning to work in an appropriate and respectful way following the tragic incident.”
